It looks like another quiet Sunday is in store for those wanting to watch some Sprint Cup action.
So I thought this would be a good time to talk about my favorite NASCAR tracks.
1. Daytona
I can't help it but my favorite track is Daytona Speedway. Maybe that's because it's the first track I went to and first victory lane I ever walked in. Just to think of all the drivers who had celebrated where I was standing: Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., Tony Stewart, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip etc.
There is the museum outside of turn four which is chalked full of history of the track. But besides that, the races at Daytona are fun to watch. I'm always on the edge of my seat when it gets down to the last 20 laps. I don't feel that way watching any other race.
The lead swaps back and forth and it sometimes comes down to the last lap with who ever gets that last push from someone to take the lead. Winning at Daytona, in any event on the NASCAR circuit, is big. I haven't missed many laps run at this track in the Cup series.
2. Indianapolis
Indianapolis also has history and heritage and it's another race I try not to miss. I know NASCAR has only been racing there since the mid 1990s, but I like seeing the Cup cars run where Indy Cars usually go.
There's also the fact that the winner at the end of the race gets to celebrate by kissing the bricks at the finish line.
3. Bristol
Small track racing at it's best. I like to see 43 cars put on a track that isn't even a mile long. When the pole winner takes the green flag, the driver in 43rd place is on the back stretch.
Of course people also like Bristol because that close of racing will bring wrecks and bad tempers. There have been helmets thrown along with fist during and after the race. Not to mention drivers banging their cars into each other on pit road. And there is usually a good battle for the lead as the race winds down to the last lap.
4. Atlanta
Maybe this one is in my top five because I live in Georgia. That does help some but another reason is because of the racing that goes on there. They claim it's the fastest track on the circuit.
But it's also the one track that is known for it's great finishes. I'll never forget Kevin Harvick's first win against Jeff Gordon and how close that was. Or the side by side battle between Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson a few years ago.
5. Talladega
I like restrictor plate racing and the only two places you can see that is Daytona and Talladega. I've been to both tracks. While Daytona is near the beach and has many stores and restaurants around it, Talladega doesn't.
There is a nice racing museum next to the track filled with old NASCAR and other racing cars.
But the track is very, very big and the racing is close. Just like Daytona, there is the chance for the big wreck. With cars that close to each other, all it takes it a little slip and many cars are taken out.
Drivers have said this type of racing isn't fun for them. But it packs the grandstands and keeps the ratings up.
Let me know what your favorite track is and why.
