It's been almost two years since Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his last points race in the Sprint Cup season. On Sunday, he was back in victory lane. And it wasn't easy.
TNT, which televised the race, certainly had drama as Earnhardt and his crew gambled on fuel to win at Michigan. When the caution came out with about four laps to go, the cameras kept focused on what Earnhardt was doing. He was cutting his car on and off as he was trying to save fuel.
When the race went back to action, Earnhardt was able to make it around one lap before somebody hit Michael Waltrip and brought out the final caution. As Waltrip (who for once was having a pretty good run) spun into the infield, Earnhardt and his crew could begin to celebrate. All they needed Earnhardt to do was keep up a reasonable speed to cross the finish line. He did.
This was a win that everyone should have known was coming. It also tighten up the points battle as now Earnhardt and Jeff Burton are closer to points-leader Kyle Busch.
With Earnhardt winning, the focus will now probably shift to Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon as two drivers who usually win more than once in a season who have yet to win a race in 2008. I can't see that lasting much longer.
Then again, I thought Earnhardt would have won a race before the mid part of June.
While the caution was good for Earnhardt, it was bad for Waltrip. The two-time Daytona 500 winner was having a good day before that wreck. I didn't check where he finished, but Waltrip needed a good finish because he needed points to crack the top 35.
It was good to see Brian Vickers racing in the top 10. Vickers, who drives a Toyota for Red Bull, had what seemed to be one of the best cars all day besides Jimmie Johnson. Both seemed to have the cars to beat.
Of course Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards looked good. Kenseth is another driver who is getting hot at just the right time.
