Favorite Racing Movies

Favorite Racing Movies
Since we're just starting this thing and we're coming off a slow weekend in NASCAR, I thought I'd mention a few of my favorite NASCAR movies.
Honestly, that won't take long. Let's start with "Days of Thunder." The movie uses a few NASCAR drivers at real NASCAR tracks and that's about it.
Of course the movie is slammed for not being realistic to today's NASCAR. One reason is the movie came out in 1990. Even back then, this Tom Cruise movie (which I call his version of "Top Gun" on a race track) had some inaccuracies from the real sport. If you don't believe me, go to the Internet Movie Database, type in Days of Thunder and scroll down to the goofs icon.
But if you want a look at what NASCAR used to look like 18 years ago you can't go wrong by renting it or just keep flipping the television around late at night and you may come across it.
Another movie with NASCAR ties is "Talladega Nights: Ballad of Ricky Bobby." This Will Ferrell comedy is funny. You should be able to watch it and laugh at something. If you're watching it to see good Sprint Cup or racing scenes, don't bother looking here.
I saw the movie last summer and I can't remember one racing scene that sticks out.
Now I come to the one NASCAR related movie that is better than the previous two I've mentioned: "Cars." Yes a cartoon where there are no people just cars who basically rule the world.
If I remember right, NASCAR isn't mention in the movie but you can tell it based on the sport. Plus there are famous NASCAR Cup stars like Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. who use their voice for several of the cars in the movie.
Race car drivers Michael Schumacher and Mario Andretti also star in the film.
In ways of movies about racing, there are other movies out there. One that comes to mind is Kenny Rogers in "Six Pack." Yes, that is Rogers the country singer. In fact his hit song "Love Will Turn You Around," comes from this movie.
Rogers is a race car driver trying to make it big when he comes across a group of kids who turn out to be very good with cars. In the end, Rogers gets a chance to race in Winston Cup (what Sprint Cup used to be called) at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
You may say it doesn't look like the Atlanta race track I saw a few weeks ago. That's because this movie, which came out in 1982, was done before changes were made at the track. According to Wikipedia.com, the frontstretch and backstretch was swapped and the track went from being an oval to quad-oval.
If you want to see the track the way it used to be, watch "Six Pack."
Now switching gears, another racing movie that I saw a lot when I was little was "Heart Like a Wheel." This is a true story about Shirley Muldowney who became the first woman to be a top-fuel drag racer.
The drag racing scenes are great. The movie stars Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges and a young Anthony Edwards.
Now I'm sure there are other good racing movies out there. The ones I've mention today are all worth seeing. But let me know if you can think of others.
