Kyle Busch won the first race in the Car of Tomorrow in 2007. A few months later, he began looking for another ride after Rick Hendrick's won the Dale Earnhardt Jr. sweepstakes.
Busch landed at Joe Gibbs Racing and he has been hot ever since. It doesn't matter what series he's driving in, Busch has put the pedal down and won in all three of NASCAR's top series.
He won his second Sprint Cup race on Sunday at Talladega, having to come back from a lap down to take the checkered flag under caution after cars started wrecking on the last lap.
Busch had what was clearly the move of the race when Jamie McMurray got into him and both started to go sideways. But they were able to get their cars under control and continue their race.
Busch was able to get the lead late in the race and hang on while the big wreck was happening behind him.
I was able to see some of this on replays because I was making my way back from south Georgia where my mother-in-law was getting married (it was a good ceremony). My wife and I got to listen to the final 80 laps and it seemed like there was a different leader about every other lap or so.
We stopped at a rest area and Denny Hamlin was leading. When we got back in the car, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was at the front.
That's the thing about restrictor plate racing. It seems that Talladega is going to have a lot of passing back and forth. And like I wrote on Friday, the last couple of laps were intense with drivers who had been hanging back coming to the front.
The last lap wrecked ended a lot of good runs for some teams who needed a good finish. But in the end, it was Busch smoking his tires and celebrating in victory lane.
